‘He’s one of one’: How José Ramírez keeps delivering in clutch moments for the Guardians

CLEVELAND, Ohio — In the Guardians clubhouse, there’s a running joke about José Ramírez that perfectly captures his unmatched clutch gene.

When Ramírez steps to the plate in critical moments, the coaching staff has a bit they do. As Joe Noga revealed on the latest Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast: “When José comes up to the plate in a big moment and big situation manager Stephen Vogt looks to associate manager Craig Albernaz, he looks to the coaches on the bench and he says, he says, ‘Come on, Josey, just once, will you come through for us?’”

The punchline, of course, is that Ramírez almost always delivers.

He did it again Thursday in Detroit, launching his 29th home run of the season in the seventh inning against Tigers reliever Trevor Melton. The blast provided the go ahead runs in Cleveland’s 3-1 victory, completing a sweep that kept their improbable playoff chase alive.

What makes Ramírez’s clutch performances so remarkable isn’t just their frequency — it’s the calm demeanor with which he approaches these high-pressure situations.

“What I like about José is you ask him, are you nervous?” Paul Hoynes explained on the podcast. “He goes, ‘No, I’ve been in that situation so many times. I’m calm. I’m just looking for a pitch to hit’… I really believe what Ramírez says in that situation, because he’s been in that situation countless times.”

That calmness under pressure separates the good players from the great ones. While most hitters might feel their heart racing in a tie game in the late innings of a must-win September contest, Ramírez operates with the casual confidence of someone who’s seen it all before — because he has.
