Sixers drop preseason matchup to Knicks in Abu Dhabi

The Philadelphia 76ers began the preseason on Thursday afternoon out in Abu Dhabi with a matchup with the New York Knicks. The Sixers were looking to get off on the right foot as they begin to turn the page on a frustrating 2024-25 season.

While Joel Embiid and Paul George did not play in this game as both stars look to take their time in terms of their return to the floor, the Sixers were able to get looks at Tyrese Maxey, rookie VJ Edgecombe, and new additions Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker. It was a tough shooting performance for Philadelphia as the Sixers fell to the Knicks 99-84, but Edgecombe had 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists. The Sixers shot 3-for-35 from deep on the afternoon.

Maxey had 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists, Kelly Oubre Jr. had eight points, four rebounds, and three assists, and Barlow had six points and 10 rebounds. Hunter Sallis added eight points.

Here are the player grades following the exhibition loss:

Tyrese Maxey: B-minus

The speed at which Maxey played in this one was evident from the jump. Playing next to the rookie Edgecombe, the two of them pushed the ball with every opportunity they had, and the Sixers were able to get some easy baskets. Maxey was able to get into the paint and make things happen for the offense in terms of his scoring ability. He struggled with his 3-point shooting, but his finishing ability in the paint was helpful.

VJ Edgecombe: B-minus

The biggest thing that stood out about Edgecombe in this one is the speed. For a rookie, he had no trouble getting into the paint and putting pressure on the rim and it was impressive. He was all over the floor in terms of getting to the basket, getting into the mix for rebounds, and making plays with his passing. The one negative for Edgecombe was the shooting struggles as he was unable to find a rhythm, but the Sixers as a whole struggled to find a rhythm.

Kelly Oubre Jr.: C

Oubre had some good defensive moments in this one. He used his speed, athleticism, and defensive instincts to come up with some takeaways for Philadelphia and get them out and running. He struggled with his shot, but it’s the first preseason game. One can attribute that to some rust.

Dominick Barlow: B

Drawing the start, Barlow played with a ton of energy. He was grabbing big rebounds, including having an offensive putback for a slam, and was able to help space the floor for Philadelphia. There was a lot to like about his fit in this group.

Adem Bona: B

The big man benefited greatly from the Sixers pushing the pace. His performance started with him throwing down two lobs—one from Maxey and another from Edgecombe—and the Sixers took advantage of what he can bring to the floor. The issue, as it was when he was a rookie, was that he got into foul trouble early. That’s something the Sixers have to work with him on.

Johni Broome: B

Broome played big in this one. He was big around the basket, moved well in the paint, and had some good moments in terms of his rebounding and defensively. He has a high basketball IQ and it’s obvious that he can fit with this group.

Andre Drummond: C-minus

The veteran had some struggles on the defensive end, but he was able to rebound the basketball well and finish off an opportunity at the basket. He is going to have to be better defensively going forward, but Drummond knows that and will fix that.

Justin Edwards: F

This was a tough offensive performance for Edwards. He had a couple of turnovers and was unable to convert on his open looks from the perimeter. He wasn’t able to make that big defensive impact, either.

Hunter Sallis: C-plus

Sallis wasn’t able to convert on his 3-point looks–it was a struggle for the Sixers overall–but he was able to get into the paint, draw defenders, and make things happen on the offensive end. He was able to get to the line and convert on those chances to get the scoreboard moving.

Jabari Walker: C

Walker played with a ton of energy off the bench. He had a nice roll to the basket for a layup and had some impressive rebounds. He did have some tough defensive moments, but it’s the first preseason game. That can be cleaned up.

Eric Gordon: D

The veteran missed his four attempts early on, but he did make a free throw and helped space the floor in his minutes. Gordon’s mere presence on the floor makes a difference as it puts the pressure on opposing defenses to acknowledge him.
