WWE SmackDown Star’s Contract Expiring Soon: Report

A member of WWE’s “Friday Night SmackDown” brand reportedly has an expiring contract. Fightful reports that Santos Escobar of Legado del Fantasma might not be in WWE much longer. The report notes that Escobar’s contract will be up “very soon,” and the indication is that it isn’t likely he’ll be sticking around.

The report could not confirm whether or not both sides discussed an extension.

Escobar sparked speculation surrounding his WWE status with a post on X. The “SmackDown” talent posted an image of himself along with an hourglass emoji. This fueled rumors that Escobar is potentially on his way out of the company.

Santos Escobar Mostly Inactive in 2025

Despite being healthy, Escobar hasn’t seen much action in 2025. He’s had just three matches on “SmackDown” this year, and he performed at the “AAA x WWE Worlds Collide” show in Los Angeles.

In addition, Escobar had two non-televised matches during live events in Mexico. Escobar also competed in the Royal Rumble earlier this year, making his total just seven matches in 2025.

Many thought Escobar might take on a bigger role after his stablemates, Los Garza, captured the AAA World Tag Team Championship. The reign only lasted two months, however, as Pagano and Psycho Clown took the gold from Los Garza after winning a street fight at “Triplemanía XXXIII.”

It was noted in the report that if Escobar leaves WWE, he is expected to be in high demand from numerous promotions. Escobar first gained notoriety using the El Hijo del Fantasma name.

Prior to signing with WWE back in 2019, Escobar captured several titles under the CMLL and AAA banners. He is also a former Lucha Underground Gift of the Gods Champion.

There is currently no word on the future of Los Garza if Escobar’s contract expires without a new deal in place.
