The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has upgraded Friday to a WJZ First Alert Weather Day for snow Friday late morning through early Friday evening. Due to the cold temperatures, any untreated surfaces could be slippery.
First snow of the year expected in many areas
A storm system to our south and west will approach central and eastern Maryland Thursday night.
On the northern side of this storm system, a large area of snow showers and steady light snow will push into parts of our area from the south and west. Snow will begin as early as 4 a.m. around Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties. In Baltimore City, the chance of light snow increases after 6 a.m. The eastern shore will see snow in many spots after 5 a.m.
Friday’s high temperatures will barely reach the freezing mark. Any snow that falls will stick on untreated surfaces. Treated surfaces should remain only wet. Be extra careful on sidewalks, bridges and overpasses during the morning commute.
A widespread coating of snow is expected south of the I-70 corridor. Baltimore City is expected to see less than an inch. Much of Anne Arundel County should see around an inch of snow. Similar amounts are expected on the other side of the bay.
Untreated surfaces will be slippery through Saturday morning, with temperatures well below freezing.
Another shot of Arctic cold early next week
Another round of unseasonably cold air will sweep into Maryland early next workweek.
Right now, this shot of cold air looks to blast through without much wintry weather. However, a few rain or snow showers are possible late Sunday, into Monday as the cold air arrives.
