Severe weather possible Thursday evening as cold front stalls over region

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A cold front pushing through the state will stall along the Kansas-Nebraska border tonight, setting the stage for a chance of showers, thunderstorms and possible severe weather into Thursday evening.

Look for our gusty winds to ease as we head into Wednesday with a continued low-end chance for some spotty showers and isolated thunderstorms into late Wednesday night. That activity — if realized — would be possible in eastern and southeastern parts of the state.

Thursday’s Severe Weather Window

Thursday morning to the early afternoon will bring chances for a few showers along the front. As some upper-level support moves into the region, additional showers and storms will develop as the front lifts slightly northward. The main severe weather window arrives Thursday afternoon into the evening, and will all depend on where the stalled out front settles. A little further to the north, and Lincoln will see increased chances for severe weather. A little further south, and Lincoln’s severe threat will be greatly diminished. On top of that, the activity in the morning and early afternoon could impact severe storms later in the day. If the atmosphere doesn’t have a chance to ‘recharge’, it would limit the severe potential across the area.

All modes of severe weather will be possible on Thursday – though hail and wind will be the primary threats with a low-end tornado threat in southeastern Nebraska. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for severe storms Thursday afternoon and evening for areas along and south of the front, with a Marginal Risk extending further north and west.

After the initial wave of storms develops and pushes southeast off the front, some lingering thunderstorm activity is possible into very early Friday morning.

Cooler Thursday, Drying Out Friday

Temperatures will be noticeably cooler Thursday, dropping into the 50s, 60s and 70s across the state, with the warmest readings south of the stationary boundary in far southern and southwestern Nebraska.

Look for highs in the 50s, 60s, and 70s on Thursday.

Friday will remain the coolest day of the week, with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s and overcast skies. Lingering showers or storms are possible into very early morning, with the day turning generally dry, though isolated showers or thundershowers cannot be ruled out.

Active Pattern Continues Into Next Week

The active weather pattern doesn’t end Friday. An active surface pattern develops this weekend as an upper-level trough tracks into the western United States. Temperatures will warm into the 70s Saturday and upper 70s to mid-80s Sunday before peaking Monday in the mid-80s. Rain and thunderstorm chances increase with the warming trend.

Daily shower and thunderstorm chances are expected over the next 7 to 10 days through early next week, though widespread heavy rain is not anticipated on any single day. Precipitation amounts are expected to be fairly light throughout this period, with a few hundredths to perhaps a tenth of an inch in areas of thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center is monitoring the region for possible severe weather early next week, with the potential for strong to severe storms again on Monday as another system approaches.
