LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2026 Memorial Day game carried extra meaning for one family in particular — the Karros family.
Longtime Dodgers first baseman and current TV color commentator Eric Karros found himself in a rare and emotional position: calling a game in which his son was actively participating on the field at the Major League level for the first time.
It was a full-circle baseball moment layered with history, pride, and a touch of broadcast humor.
Father on the Mic, Son on the Field
Working alongside broadcast partner Stephen Nelson, Karros openly joked about divided loyalties throughout the night, lightheartedly acknowledging how difficult it was to remain fully impartial with his son in the opposing lineup.
That son, Kyle Karros, made an immediate impression, recording a single in his first at-bat. He even shared a brief on-field exchange with Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, who was well aware of the storyline unfolding with Eric watching from the broadcast booth.
For Eric Karros, it was a uniquely surreal experience — breaking down the game professionally while simultaneously watching his own son compete on the same field.
A Baseball Legacy That Comes Full Circle
Kyle Karros’ path to the majors carries clear echoes of his father’s journey.
He grew up around Dodger Stadium, spending time in the clubhouse and around the organization during his childhood while Eric starred as one of the Dodgers’ most productive hitters in the 1990s.
Like his father, Kyle also took the college baseball route, attending UCLA before beginning his professional career. Unlike Eric, however, he was ultimately drafted by the Colorado Rockies organization and made his MLB debut on August 8 last year.
His connection to the Dodgers story has already produced notable symmetry. In a previous meeting against Los Angeles, Kyle hit his first Major League home run off Emmet Sheehan — the same pitcher who took the mound for the Dodgers on Memorial Day 2026. At the time, Eric was in attendance as a fan, watching his son from the stands in an already surreal family moment.
Another Karros in the Dodgers System
Adding even more depth to the family storyline, another Karros son, Jared, is currently developing within the Dodgers organization as a pitcher with the Double A Tulsa Drillers, further extending the family’s baseball footprint within the franchise’s system.
For Eric Karros, Memorial Day 2026 became more than just another broadcast assignment. It turned into a rare intersection of generations, careers, and baseball history unfolding in real time at Dodger Stadium.
It was, in every sense, a night the Karros family will not forget.
