Tennis Tracker: Venus WIlliams defeats Peyton Stearns in long-awaited return


Tournaments in Washington, Kitzbuhel, Prague and Umag continue today, with Naomi Osaka, Gael Monfils and Venus Williams among the big names taking to the court.

03:30 CET – Venus Williams defeats Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in her first match in over a year after putting up nine aces.

It now marks Williams’ first singles win since 2023. 

02:20 CET – Corentin Moutet dominates his fellow Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-1, 6-0.

Moutet will now face Daniel Evans in the Round of 16. 

02:10 CET – The Brit Daniel Evans upsets USA’s Alex Michelsen on his own turf in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. 

The 2023 D.C. Open champion has now won seven consecutive matches in Washington. 

01:30 CET – Ben Shelton defeats Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

MacDonald committed five double faults and didn’t win a single return game. Meanwhile, Shelton gets an almost flawless victory after nine aces and 23 winners.

01:00 CET – Back on the women’s side, Naomi Osaka wins in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 over Yulia Putintseva in her first appearance in D.C. since 2018. 

Osaka will now move on to face Emma Raducanu in a battle of Grand Slam champions!

00:08 CET – On the men’s side in Washington, Gabriel Diallo has beaten Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 6-4 to book his spot in the third round.

23:50 CET – Emma Raducanu has overcome seventh seed Marta Kostyuk 7-6, 6-4 to move into the second round on the women’s side in Washington.

The 2021 US Open champion will be hoping to keep up that good form through the American swing.

23:07 CET – Cameron Norrie has come back to stun second seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and reach the third round in Washington.

Earlier, Aleksandar Kovacevic beat Quentin Halys 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to progress to the second round.

In the last match of the day in Umag, local wild card Dino Prizmic defeated Elmer Moller 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round.

21:20 CET – Over in Umag, Jesper de Jong has beaten Mili Poljicak 6-3, 6-3 to cruise into the second round. Earlier, Pablo Llamas Ruiz also won to go through.

20:44 CET – French veteran Gael Monfils is out of the men’s tournament in Washington after losing to Chinese qualfier Wu Yibing 6-3, 6-1. Local qualifier Zachary Svajda has progressed after beating Miomir Kecmanovic 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

On the women’s side, Anna Kalinskaya has beaten Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 6-3 to move into the second round. Sixth seed Sofia Kenin is also through after beating Hailey Baptiste 6-3, 7-6.

19:52 CET – American Caroline Dolehide is through in Washington after a hard-fought 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3 win over compatriot McCartney Kessler.

19:23 CET – Camilo Ugo Carabelli is the first winner of the day in Umag, with the Argentine coming from a set down to defeat Francesco Passaro 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

Over in Kitzbuhel, Thiago Seyboth Wild has rounded off the day’s play with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Justin Engel.

18:57 CET – China’s Yunchaokete Bu has advanced in Washington, defeating experienced Belgian David Goffin in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side of the tournament, Taylor Townsend is through after an impressive 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Tatjana Maria.

18:32 CET – Brandon Nakashima has beaten fellow American Ethan Quinn 6-3, 6-4 to become the first man into the third round in Washington.

18:15 CET – Top seed Linda Noskova has edged Anastasia Gasanova 7-6, 7-6 to progress to the second round at the Livesport Prague Open. Next up for the Czech is a meeting with Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

17:45 CET – Fifth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry has been surprisingly knocked out in Kitzbuhel, losing 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to home hope Filip Misolic.

Thiago Agustin Tirante is also through in Austria, while 20-year-old Lucie Havlickova has advanced on home soil in Prague.

16:43 CET – France’s Arthur Cazaux is the latest man to advance in Kitzbuhel, battling through a hard-fought contest to defeat Ignacio Buse 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

16:07 CET – Fourth seed Wang Xinyu is safely through in Prague after a convincing 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Harriet Dart, while home favourite Katerina Siniakova and Leolia Jeanjean have also progressed.

14:18 CET – Jan-Lennard Struff has downed Sebastian Ofner in Kitzbuhel, winning 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round.

13:42 CET – Botic van de Zandschulp is through in Kitzbuhel, with the Dutchman outlasting Nicolas Jarry in three competitive sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, in Prague, Barbora Palicova, Jessika Ponchet and Tereza Valentova have secured wins to advance to the second round.

12:54 CET – Over in Kitzbuhel, Yannick Hanfmann has progressed to the next round, battling through a tight opening set to defeat home favourite Lukas Neumayer 7-5, 6-2.

12:35 CET – Czech wildcard Dominika Salkova is the first winner of the day at the Prague Open after a relatively routine 6-3, 6-3 triumph over compatriot Laura Samson.

09:54 CET – Today’s headline action comes at the ATP and WTA events in Washington, where Venus Williams plays her first competitive singles match in 16 months against compatriot Peyton Stearns.

Lorenzo Musetti, Ben Shelton, Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu are also involved in the capital throughout the day.

Elsewhere, top seed and home favourite Linda Noskova opens her campaign in Prague, while there’s plenty of intriguing action in Austria and Croatia.

09:18 CET – Before we look ahead to today’s play, there were a couple of notable results overnight in Washington, with seventh seed Magda Linette beating home favourite Danielle Collins 7-5, 6-4 and Aleksandar Vukic proving too strong for Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
