Telecom Argentina plans to convert its edge data centers to support artificial intelligence workloads, bringing each location to a total capacity of 10 MW.
The company has 16 data centers in the country, five of which are dedicated to enterprise client workloads, while the rest are for the firm’s exclusive use. With the expansion, all of them will be available to clients.
Telecom’s main data center is located in Pacheco, Buenos Aires. With a 10MW capacity, it features hyperscaler infrastructure and is “highly occupied,” said Julio Hutka, the company’s director of B2B services, during Telecom SummIT. Telecom has already prepared a business plan for the expansion of that center at the same location, although he did not provide details.
The start of construction of a new module in Pacheco, as well as the expansion of the edge centers, will depend on the evolution of demand and the signing of contracts, Hutka said in response to a question from BNamericas.
Hutka emphasized that the company’s B2B segment is growing at “double digits” despite a challenging environment for Argentine companies. “No one invests if they don’t see a return on business,” he said.
As of June 30, 2025, Telecom’s capex stood at 481 billion pesos (US$355mn), a 53.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The investments include the Telefónica operation, acquired in February.
Private networks and 5G
Telecom has nearly 25 private networks deployed for clients in the mining, oil, ports, and agroforestry sectors. The company has already begun implementing private 5G networks, leveraging network slicing technologies on the public network used by the new 5G core installed in Buenos Aires.
Asked about regulator Enacom ‘s recent decision to open spectrum to private networks, Hutka said companies could opt for that option “if there’s no other market offering that meets their needs.”
The executive added that the company offers businesses a turnkey solution for their private connectivity needs, including spectrum.
Telecom Argentina has 550 5G base stations and expects to close the year with at least 750. Weeks ago, the company announced it would triple its installed 5G base, which could bring the total to nearly 900, according to BNamericas estimates.
