Robert Porcher ‘humbled’ by Pride of the Lions induction

Detroit — The Detroit Lions’ all-time sack leader has been placed among the franchise’s legends.

Robert Porcher, who collected 95½ sacks through his 12-year career, was inducted into the Pride of the Lions at halftime of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. Porcher is the 22nd player to receive the honor, joining recent inductees Calvin Johnson (2024), Lomas Brown (2023) and Chris Spielman (2021).

“I’m just humbled, happy. Always good to be a part of this organization,” Porcher said Sunday. “It’s been now 33 years since I came here. Still getting noticed. … It is good to be here. I’m happy that my kids are here. They’re all adults. When I retired, my youngest was 5, so she really didn’t remember any of this. But now she gets to experience it. My parents are still here. That’s just a blessing.”

Porcher’s festivities began with the Lions’ alumni dinner Saturday evening, which included a surprise appearance by former head coach Wayne Fontes, 85, who led the Lions from 1988-1996, guiding the franchise to three seasons of at least 10 wins. Porcher was coached by Fontes for the first five seasons of his career. “That just made the night that he came in from Tampa,” Porcher said of Fontes.

“Last night at the dinner, it was mostly about (my former teammates), me thanking them for what they meant,” Porcher said. “Because no one gets these jackets alone. I’m well aware of that, so I just really wanted to make last night about them. But today, it’ll be about our fans. Those are the groups that have really helped and inspired me. I just want to take this time to … thank all of them for all that they’ve done to be a part of this, and help me (get) here.”

Porcher was in Allen Park this offseason, taking in training camp. He spoke with Aidan Hutchinson, letting the pass rusher know he was available, should he ever need anything. Hutchinson entered Sunday with 28½ sacks over 40 career appearances.

“Aidan is off to a great, great start, man,” Porcher said. “He is a phenomenal young player. The sky is the limit for him. I’m just one of many alums who’ve played before. It’s his seat now, but eventually it’ll become somebody else’s, just like it was mine one time and then it became James Hall’s, and them somebody else after him. Aidan is on the right track. I wish him nothing but the best.”

Teammates of Porcher’s already in the Pride of the Lions include Barry Sanders (inducted in 2009), Jason Hanson (2013), Herman Moore (2018), Spielman (2021) and Brown (2023).

“I think somebody asked me the other day, ‘So, you don’t get tired of people coming up and saying things?’ Well, it could’ve been the other way where they just walk past me and say, ‘You suck.’ They don’t say that, so I think everything has worked out OK.”
