A suspicious device that triggered the evacuation of three Ohio State University buildings was not a threat, OSU police said.

The Caldwell Lab, the journalism building, and Bolz Hall were evacuated due to the device, and will reopen, OSU police said in a post on X at 1:41 p.m. on Sept. 16.

At 12:30 p.m., Ohio State University Emergency Management wrote in a post on X that the Caldwell Lab building was being evacuated “as a precaution” while police investigated a suspicious package. An alert said the “suspicious device” was located inside Caldwell.

A few minutes later, emergency management said authorities evacuated the nearby journalism building because it is close to the lab building. A third post on X said the university expanded its evacuation to a third building, Bolz Hall.

The university has not released any further details about the package or its contents.

Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter said Columbus fire assisted OSU police at the scene.
