The All Blacks are, by some distance, the most successful team in Rugby Championship history, having won the tournament (in both its current guise and previous incarnation as the Tri-Nations) on 20 occasions since 1996. They lost out to the Springboks last year, however, and Scott Robertson’s team will be desperate to reclaim the title this year. They kick off with two tricky matches in Argentina.
The Pumas’ Rugby Championship preparation started out well, with a win against the British & Irish Lions in Dublin. But two home defeats to an England team missing their best players will have left them smarting, even though they followed up with a comfortable victory over neighbours Uruguay. Head coach Felipe Contepomi has made significant changes to the side that lost the second Test to England, however, with just four players remaining in the starting XV. Julian Montoya, who recently played his last game for Leicester Tigers, continues as captain.
The All Blacks won’t be taking anything for granted, having lost last season’s Rugby Championship opener to the Pumas in Wellington – and especially after South Africa’s shock defeat to Australia earlier today. They start their campaign with an exciting and experienced XV, featuring a backline that’s sure to cause their opponents problems. Second row Scott Barrett returns as captain, while older brother Beauden wins his 137th cap at fly-half.
