With water restored, the area is under a boil water order until further notice, according to a social media post from the town. With that restoration, the whole town once again has water service, but people may experience reduced pressure.
According to posts on the town’s social media, the break was first noticed on Friday afternoon, but officials have indicated difficulty in pinpointing the location of the leak, which they say is losing 50,000-100,000 gallons per hour.
Saturday evening, officials noted that they were investigating a second leak, in the vicinity of Laughing Earth Farms. In response to queries from residents, they said they have yet to locate the initial break.
Officials say they have also discovered a break on Roberts Drive, and are working “through the night” to repair it. Town councilman Mark Balistreri said it is not presently clear whether the Roberts Drive break is the original break first noted on Friday, but said once it is repaired, they will test the system to determine that.
According to Town Supervisor Phil Herrington, those residents without water were able to get potable water, bottled water, and have access to a warming station and showers at the Brittonkill Central Schools, 3992 State Route 2, Cropseyville, NY, between the hours of 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM on Sunday.
The town has put together an emergency operations center and is working with the county health and highway departments, among others, to come up with a plan for how to continue forward. Balistreri said if needed, they expect to work with the school district to arrange additional times when water and showers can be made available. to the public.
