Tuesday’s Champions League qualifying predictions
It has been a tale of two tournaments in the early stages of Russell Martin’s Rangers career, as he has fared far better in the Champions League than he has domestically with the Scottish giants.
Martin, a manager known for prioritising ball retention over chance creation, has fallen back into old habits in the Scottish Premiership, where the Gers have averaged 66 per cent possession but have been held to draws by Motherwell and Dundee, sides who finished in the bottom half last term.
He has fared better in Champions League qualifying, though, beating Panathinaikos 3-1 on aggregate before routing Viktoria Plzen 3-0 at Ibrox last week, and the return leg against the Czechs should provide another welcome distraction for the former Southampton boss.
A 3-0 lead would normally lead to significant rotation in a second leg but Martin knows he must keep moving through the gears if Rangers are to have any chance of challenging Celtic for the title, so many of his stars should start in Plzen, including Djeidi Gassama.
The French winger scored seven goals in 37 Championship games for Sheffield Wednesday last term and has excelled in Europe for his new side, scoring in each of his Champions League appearances and bagging a brace in the first leg against Viktoria.
Gassama is loving life north of the border and is a huge price to find the net against a Plzen side who have gone ten games without a clean sheet.
Benfica were one of the surprise packages at the Club World Cup, pipping Bayern Munich to top their section, and they have carried that form into this season, beating Sporting 1-0 in the Portuguese Super Cup before landing a 2-0 first-leg victory at Nice in Champions League qualifying.
They limited their hosts to just two shots on target at the Allianz Riviera and even with desperation growing, it is hard to see the French outfit causing the Eagles any real problems in Lisbon.
Bruno Lage has overseen 40 wins and just ten losses since being reappointed Benfica boss in September and, most impressively, the Portuguese giants have conceded just 55 goals in that run.
Each of Benfica’s last four wins have been accompanied by a clean sheet and a 1-0 victory over Bayern was the standout result in that run so they can shut out Nice once again.
