Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Greg Etafia, has added another angle to comments trailing the outing of Nigeria’s home-based players at the ongoing Championship of African Nations (CHAN 2024), as he says they must do well to get invitations into the main team.

Sports247 reports that Etafia’s verdict comes against the backdrop of a 1-0 defeat suffered by the CHAN Eagles against Senegal in their first group match, and they need to beat Sudan this Tuesday in order to stay in contention for the next round of the second-string continental competition.
However, while many football fans and observers always clamour for the presence of players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) in the Super Eagles, Etafia believes this is now their opportunity to prove that they truly deserve such recommendations.
The Moroka Swallows of South Africa’s former keeper turned gaffer declared, “This will give an advantage to the home-based players to feature at the real tournament, which is the AFCON in December.
“We are always going to have one or two players that come out, raise their heads up, and the coach will see them.”
Etafia reiterated that since Eagles’ technical adviser, Eric Chelle, is fully in charge of Nigeria’s CHAN 2024 squad, the players have better chances of playing themselves into his plans for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
“He can say, ‘Okay,’ and add them to the so-called first team for the AFCON that is coming in December. So, this is a major tournament for the home-based players, and they just have to really do well,” Etafia admonished.
