Colorado Rockies game no. 159 thread: Bradley Blalock vs. Emerson Hancock

Well, friends, we’ve only got a few more of these left this season. Unfortunately, one more game comes against the Seattle Mariners. The Colorado Rockies have not had a good time in Seattle, watching the M’s clinch a playoff berth as well as a division title over the first two games. Tonight, the Rockies will look to prevent the Mariners from clinching the postseason bye.

Bradley Blalock (2-5, 9.16 ERA) will take the hill for Colorado, trying to finish the year on a higher note. His last outing saw him surrender six runs on eight hits, including two home runs, over five innings with four strikeouts against the Los Angeles Angels. Since returning to the big league rotation, Blalock has now allowed 11 runs on 13 hits over just eight innings of work. Home runs have been a constant struggle for him, dating back to August 3, when these struggles really started to manifest following a string of good starts in July. With Cal Raleigh chasing home run history, Blalock needs to be careful to keep the ball in the ballpark.

Emerson Hancock (4-5, 5.13 ERA) will get the ball for Seattle as they aim for the sweep. Hancock worked only out of the bullpen in September, working one or two innings and has generally been successful doing that, allowing just four runs in 8 2/3 innings of work. His last start came on July 1 when he allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings. The limited bullpen action hasn’t allowed him to do much with strikeouts, but his history has shown that he can get a couple while walks were more prevalent over a start. In all likelihood, the Mariners could just let him go for as long as he can, or just use him as an opener for a bullpen day.
