A series of earthquakes, including a 4.0 magnitude quake, rattled the area near San Ramon Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The first 2.5 magnitude quake was reported around 7:45 p.m., and was centered south of San Ramon, according to the USGS.

The second one, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake, was reported just before 8 p.m. and was centered near San Ramon, as well. It was followed by a 3.6 magnitude quake, a fourth 4.0 magnitude earthquake, a fifth 3.1 magnitude earthquake and a 2.9 magnitude quake.

At around 10:45 p.m., the USGS downgraded the 2.9 magnitude earthquake to 2.3 magnitude.
