Giants name rookie Jaxson Dart backup QB to Russell Wilson on depth chart

Jaxson Dart has been promoted.

The New York Giants have listed the rookie as the No. 2 quarterback behind Russell Wilson on their unofficial depth chart entering Week 1. The Giants are on road Sunday against the Washington Commanders.

While Giants coach Brian Daboll said Monday that everyone will know who Wilson’s backup is on game day, the current depth chart at least offers a glimpse into the plan.

For now, Dart is the Giants’ QB2 after an impressive preseason, completing 68 percent of his passes (32 of 47) for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in three games.

Dart served as the primary backup to Wilson throughout the summer, taking reps ahead of veteran Jameis Winston, though Winston had previously been listed as the QB2. Winston is now the QB3.

The Giants have emphasized the plan in place for Dart’s development. From the outside looking in, that might have meant keeping Winston at the QB2 — at least in some of the early games — to avoid putting Dart in an unideal mid-game scenario should Wilson be injured.

Instead, the updated depth chart reveals Dart has earned the QB2 label. To be fair, Daboll did place him in unexpected situations throughout the preseason, whether putting him in for certain plays or turning off the headset mid-game to keep him on his toes. Dart excelled and looked every bit ready as camp and preseason games progressed.

Last week, general manager Joe Schoen said Dart impressed him “in terms of how quick he was able to pick it up and actually go execute and play fast. I would say that was something that you don’t typically see with rookie quarterbacks at times and he was able to do that.”

But the question remains: When will Dart see regular-season action?
