According to the Iowa City Police Department, officers responded around 1:29 p.m. to a report of shots fired in the 900 block of East Burlington Street. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, and officers later recovered evidence of gunfire in the area.
A Hawk Alert sent at 1:51 p.m. advised students and staff to shelter in place after a suspect was reportedly seen running westbound on foot. The alert was issued at the request of the Iowa City Police Department and later clarified to have originated off campus.
As a precaution, the Iowa City Public Library also briefly sheltered in place for about 30 minutes, coordinating with law enforcement. The library lifted its shelter order around 2:30 p.m. and said in a statement that all patrons and staff were safe and operations had resumed.
By mid-afternoon, police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public, though they encouraged residents to remain vigilant.
The alert briefly disrupted downtown activity, forcing FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff broadcast crew — in town for Saturday’s Iowa–Oregon football game — to evacuate their setup on the Pentacrest and take shelter in a nearby building.
The investigation remains ongoing.
