Netflix

What To Know

  • Season 2 of Heartbreak High ended with major relationship cliffhangers.
  • It included unresolved feelings between Amerie and Malakai, whose letter confessing his feelings was destroyed in a fire.
  • Find out where Ca$h and Darren, Spider and Missy, and Harper and Ant left off, too, ahead of Season 3.

Buckle up, SLTs! Senior year at Hartley High is almost here, and before we say goodbye to Amerie (Ayesha Madon), Harper (Asher Yasbincek), and the rest, we’re going to get some major relationship updates. Heartbreak High Season 2 bestowed some serious angst on certain couples, like Ca$h (Will McDonald) and Darren (James Majoos), while others’ fates were left on cliffhangers, like Amerie and Malakai (Thomas Weatherall).

Luckily, we know that Season 3 will wrap up all those loose ends, since they went into filming knowing that it would be the final installment. But before we find out which couples are endgame, a refresher is in order. It’s been nearly two years since we last caught up with the Hartley High gang, so Swooon is breaking down everything you need to remember about their ongoing romances.

What did Malakai’s letter to Amerie say? Are Spider (Bryn Chapman-Parish) and Missy (Sherry Lee-Watson) still going strong? Get all the answers and more below.

Amerie & Malakai

Amerie and Malakai’s relationship has been a real rollercoaster since Heartbreak High Season 1, starting all the way back when Amerie set her sights on the new guy at school. They hook up toward the beginning of Season 1, but after Malakai is assaulted by the cops at a Mardi Gras rager, he breaks up with Amerie. When he’s struggling mentally, he has a threesome with Harper and Dusty (Josh Heuston), though it doesn’t turn into anything more.

Fast forward to Season 2, and Amerie hooks up with Malakai on the first day of term. He isn’t ready to get back together with her, however, since he wants to explore his bisexuality. Enter: new kid Rowan (Sam Rechner). They have a thing for a minute, but it ends when Rowan realizes Malakai is still hung up on Amerie. After the breakup, Rowan hooks up with Amerie, which kickstarts their relationship.

Before they get too far, Amerie discovers that she’s pregnant with Malakai’s baby. When she decides to get an abortion, Malakai supports her. While that’s going on, Amerie distances herself from Rowan, but they make up and go to the Year 11 formal together. At the same time, Malakai finds out that he’s moving to Switzerland, having just realized that he really loves Amerie.

Before Malakai goes, he leaves a letter in Amerie’s locker confessing his feelings. When Rowan — revealed to be the “Bird Psycho” trying to get revenge on Amerie — sets the school on fire, the letter goes up in flames. Amerie escapes the fire safely, completely unaware of the letter’s existence. When we last see Malaki, he’s crying on a Switzerland-bound plane. (But don’t worry: He’s confirmed to return for Season 3.)

What did Malakai’s letter say?

Malakai’s letter isn’t revealed in full. There’s no voiceover of him reading it, but part of the letter is shown on camera. It reads:

“Thank you for being my first love. [For] still loving me even when I f**ked [up]. Sometimes I think we just met each other [at the] wrong time. You are the most amazing [person] and I feel like in the short time we [have known] each other, I have watched you become even [more] incredible. I wish we could have made things [work]. Maybe it would have been better if we met at 30 or 60 or even 80 in a nursing home. I guess s**t is sometimes all about timing.

I thought about staying, but I just don’t feel like I believe…

I promise one day, I’ll…

Love Malakai.”

Ca$h & Darren

Rollercoaster relationships are common at Hartley, as evidenced by Ca$h and Darren. In Season 1, Darren tells Ca$h they love him, but Ca$h turns them down, worried he’ll drag Darren down with his sketchy eshay dealings. Prior to Season 1, Ca$h helped Harper escape eshay leader Chook (Tom Wilson), but he still feels guilty about her kidnapping.

Ca$h sends Harper the video of Chook boasting about her abduction, and the cops set out to arrest the group. Before he’s taken into custody, Ca$h finds Darren at school and tells them he’s been in love with them since they were kids. He’s still taken away by the cops, but their love is out in the open.

Season 2, luckily, finds Ca$h out of prison and trying to cut ties with the eshays. That poses a problem as they face the reality of actually being together. Ca$h realizes that he’s asexual, which he has to navigate with the hypersexual Darren. They still haven’t figured everything out by the season’s end, but after the fire, they’re still committed to each other.

Spider & Missy

The most unexpected romance to come out of Season 2 is between Spider (Bryn Chapman-Parish) and Missy’s (Sherry Lee-Watson). Spider aligns himself with the Men’s Rights group, the C.U.M.L.O.R.D.s, but he undergoes a redemption arc as he falls for Missy. It starts out as a secret fling after Spider is turned on by Missy’s dominance during a soccer game. Missy starts to realize that there’s more to Spider, who learns to embrace his vulnerability, than meets the eye. Still, Missy wants to keep their relationship a secret, but they go public at the school dance.

Harper & Ant

Recovering from her Season 1 trauma, a closed-off Harper finds a connection with Ant (Brodie Townsend) in Season 2. It’s only platonic at first, even though Ant is developing feelings for Harper. He wants to be a better man by being friends with a woman without it becoming sexual or romantic. After growing closer, though, Ant confesses how he feels, but Harper doesn’t return the sentiment. He accepts that Harper isn’t ready.

In the aftermath of the fire, Harper finds Ant and shares a dance with him. They sway and press their foreheads together, not defining their relationship quite yet. We’ll have to see where they stand come Season 3. In the meantime, let us know in the comments below which couples you want to end up together in the final season!
