EVs made affordable – by policy
Nepal’s pivot toward electrification gained serious traction in 2020, when the government restructured its vehicle taxation regime. Where electric vehicles were once subject to import duties of over 100%, the revised policy reduced rates to as low as 10% for EVs with smaller battery packs. The result? EVs became dramatically cheaper than petrol or diesel equivalents, reversing the affordability equation in one of South Asia’s most cost-sensitive markets.
With around 90% of Nepal’s electricity generated from renewable hydropower, EVs offer not only a cheaper alternative but also a cleaner one. Government incentives haven’t stopped at private vehicles either. Concessions also apply to electric buses and two-wheelers, while plans are in motion to scale up public charging infrastructure across key routes and urban centres.
Chinese EV brands fill the gap
While Nepal’s progressive policies created demand, it was Chinese EV makers that swiftly stepped in to supply it. Brands like BYD, Great Wall Motors (Ora), and DFSK have become household names on Nepalese roads. Their vehicles offer a compelling blend of affordability, high-tech features, and model variety – from compact city hatchbacks to full-size family SUVs and electric two-wheelers.
Crucially, these manufacturers have also invested in local dealership and after-sales networks. In a market where service accessibility is a major purchase driver, this support infrastructure has helped cement consumer confidence in electric vehicles as reliable, everyday transport.
BYD, for example, has become a standout success story. Its Atto 3 SUV is a regular sight on Kathmandu’s roads, and its electric buses are making inroads in public and commercial fleets. Meanwhile, a new wave of smaller, sub-£15,000 Chinese EVs and scooters is helping bring electrification to the masses.
A Regional outlier
Nepal’s success is all the more striking given the regional context. While larger neighbours like India and Bangladesh grapple with high EV costs, inconsistent policy, and infrastructure gaps, Nepal has created a rare alignment of factors: clean power, forward-looking policy, and a pipeline of affordable EVs.
Today, over 10% of new car sales in Nepal are electric – figures that rival or surpass markets with far more resources. The capital, Kathmandu, is rapidly evolving into an EV-forward cityscape, and public appetite for clean transport is growing.
The Road Ahead
There are challenges, of course. While urban charging is improving, infrastructure in rural areas remains sparse. The country’s reliance on imported vehicles – and the foreign currency needed to buy them – adds a layer of economic vulnerability. And like many emerging EV markets, Nepal must also manage growing demand on its power grid.
Still, Nepal’s trajectory is clear. It’s becoming a case study in how even smaller economies can leapfrog legacy transport systems and build a dynamic EV ecosystem, if the right policy and market conditions align.
At a time when many larger nations are still debating how to unlock the EV transition, Nepal is showing what’s possible when political will, green energy, and global EV supply chains come together with purpose.
