University of Iowa students received a Hawk Alert on Friday afternoon, urging them to shelter in place after gunshots were reported near campus.The initial Hawk Alert was sent out at 1:51 p.m., noting that there had been gunshots in the area of E Burlington Street and S Governor Street and that a suspect was heading eastbound. A follow-up alert sent a few minutes later said the suspect fled westbound on foot. The Iowa City Police Department shared on social media that it is actively investigating a shots fired incident in the 900 block of E. Burlington Street.A Hawk Alert update sent out at 2:15 p.m. further clarified that the incident originated off campus and that students should remain vigilant, continue shelter in place and report suspicious activity to 911.A fourth Hawk Alert sent out shortly after 2:30 p.m. says the ICPD believes the shots fired were an “isolated incident” and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
