Among those potential candidates appears to be former NFL star coach Jon Gruden.
After coaching for five different NFL teams over a 29-year span, Gruden has been out of the coaching ranks for several years now, growing his media brand and working most recently with Barstool Sports. However, he said on Friday that he is open to returning to coaching, even at the college level, and is always prepared for that change to take place.
“I absolutely love football,” Gruden said on Friday’s episode of ‘Pardon My Take’. “Who knows what will happen, but I’m preparing myself as always to coach. But, behind the scenes, we’re getting plenty of football. I promise you.”
Gruden most recently served as a head coach with the Oakland Raiders from 2018 to 2021, but he ultimately resigned after a controversial email scandal unfolded. Before that, he spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl in 2003. The last time Gruden coached at the college level was in 1991 as the tight ends coach for the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Before the season is over, there are bound to be more openings at the head coaching ranks in college, and Gruden’s name will likely be thrown around as a strong candidate. Whether or not he ends up taking one of those jobs remains to be seen.
