Initially joining Ohio State as a 4-star recruit in the 2023 class, McDonald had a limited role in his freshman year, spending most of his time on the sidelines. In his sophomore season, he found himself behind Tyleik Williams, who would go on to secure a first-round draft pick. Nonetheless, McDonald steadily contributed to the Buckeyes’ defensive line, participating in all 16 games and amassing 19 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, along with a pass defended.
The 2025 season marked a significant turning point in McDonald’s career. Seizing the opportunity to take over the starting nose tackle role, he transformed his gameplay into one of dominance.
