The Little League Baseball World Series is down to the final six teams, with the last two semifinal games set to take place Thursday afternoon in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In the United States bracket, it will be Las Vegas (Mountain Region) vs. Irmo, South Carolina (Southeast Region), at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to take on Fairfield, Connecticut (Metro Region), in the U.S. championship Saturday afternoon.
Down 1-0, in their last at-bat, Irmo tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and then, after giving up five runs in the seventh inning, scored six runs in the bottom of the frame to stun Midwest Region champ Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the 7-6 victory. Irmo beat Lake Mary, Florida, last year’s Little League World Series champion, in this year’s Southeast Region final earlier this month to advance to Pennsylvania.
The first game of the day will determine the second team to reach the final on the international side. Venezuela (Latin America Region) will take on Aruba (Caribbean Region) at 3 p.m. The winner will face Taipei (Asia-Pacific Region) Saturday afternoon.
The LLBWS double-elimination event began with 20 teams, 10 teams from the United States and 10 teams from elsewhere around the globe. The tournament, which has taken place annually since 1947, began on Aug. 13 and will conclude Sunday with the consolation game at 10 a.m. and the world championship at 3 p.m.
The 11-day event will feature the Little League Home Run Derby on Friday, and the MLB Little League Classic, in which the host New York Mets beat the Seattle Mariners, 7-3, at 2,366-seat Bowman Field in neighboring Williamsport, was last Sunday.
How the Little League World Series works
The Little League World Series uses a bracket, double-elimination system. Until it reaches the championship games, any team that loses once will get another chance to stay in the competition, but once a team loses twice, they are eliminated from play. The U.S., international and the LLBWS championship game will be winner take all.
The games run for six innings and if the score is tied up at that point, a seventh inning, played standard as the ones before it, is added. If the contest is still tied after seven innings, each team will begin their half of the inning with a runner on second base.
All players must be between 10 and 12 years old.
