Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich sums up the twists, turns and countless story lines that go into a single baseball season.
SAN DIEGO – What a day for Jackson Chourio.
Shaking off what had been a nightmarish road trip coming in, he robbed a three-run home run from Xander Bogaerts in center field in the first inning and then singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Brice Turang’s single in the seventh as the Milwaukee Brewers avoided being swept by the San Diego Padres, 3-1, at Petco Park on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 24.
The win was the 96th of the season for Milwaukee, tying the franchise record.
It also lowered the Brewers’ magic number for clinching homefield advantage throughout the postseason to one.
BOX SCORE: Brewers 3, Padres 1
Chad Patrick delivered three shutout innings as he stepped in to start for Quinn Priester, who has been pushed back a couple days, and five relievers combined to cover the final six innings.
Danny Jansen hit a solo homer in the ninth to provide extra breathing room, with Abner Uribe retiring the Padres in order in the ninth for his sixth save.
Before the game, Milwaukee recalled right-hander Carlos Rodriguez from Class AAA Nashville and designated left-hander Bruce Zimmermann, who made the spot start in the 7-0 loss on Sept. 23, for assignment.
More clutch two-out hitting
Jansen opened the seventh against tough left-hander Adrian Morejon with a single only to have Christian Yelich ground into a double play.
Chourio, who has endured a dreadful road trip overall (3 for 24, one RBI coming into the day), followed with a single and stole second. That brought Turang to the plate and for the third straight at-bat he singled, this time scoring Chourio for the 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Nick Mears pulled off a high-wire act by escaping a bases-loaded, one-out situation in which Padres manager Mike Shildt was ejected by getting Freddy Fermin looking at a called third strike and Luis Arráez to fly out to center.
Jansen capped the scoring with a booming solo homer down the left-field line in the ninth.
San Diego ties it up
Erick Fedde replaced Patrick in the fourth and pitched tremendously, retiring each of the first eight batters he faced.
He got to within a strike of making it nine, but Jackson Merrill lifted an opposite-field homer to left to tie it at 1-1 and leave the game to Aaron Ashby.
Finally, the offense delivers
It was more frustration for the offense through the fourth inning, with Milwaukee managing not to score despite bases loaded and one out in the third (double play) and two on and one out in the fourth (consecutive strikeouts).
The fifth was trending poorly as well with a couple strikeouts to start before Turang singled, went from first to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a double to left by Andrew Vaughn.
Chad Patrick does his job
Thrown into the fire with little notice as the Brewers opted to push Priester’s start back to Friday, Patrick delivered three shutout innings with six strikeouts.
He received a huge boost in the first inning when, with a pair of runners on and two outs, Jackson Chourio robbed Xander Bogaerts of a homer with a leaping grab at the wall in center field.
Patrick faced one batter over the minimum his final two innings, allowing a pair of hits and pair of walks in the process, and finished the regular season 3-8 with a 3.56 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 125 strikeouts in 118 ⅔ innings over 26 appearances (23 starts).
