One week after Bourbon & Beyond, waves of music fans are once again pouring into the Highland Festival Grounds at the Expo Center for Louder Than Life.“It’s kind of like a neighborhood block party for us,” said Lamont Mitchell, who lives near the Expo Center. Some neighbors say there’s been a lot less parking near their homes.“Last weekend was kind of slow. This is crazy. It’s absolutely crazy,” said Darren Washburn.Saturday is expected to be even busier, with the Louisville football game and the September meet at Churchill Downs overlapping with the festival. Close-in parking isn’t guaranteed, and residents like Mitchell are turning their yards into paid parking to help visitors get closer to the gates. He says the proceeds are going to a good cause at home.“He’s the one who wanted to start parking the cars — my little man right here — so we kind of park for him and let him have a lot of the money,” said Mitchell, noting the cash will go toward his son’s college fund. For the past three years, Washburn has ferried festivalgoers in his golf cart.“It’s fun. Helps people out. I charge rides for tips and whatever they want to give — and if they don’t, they don’t. It’s OK,” he said.Hotels and entertainment venues are pitching in as well. Harry Patel of Derby City Gaming and Hotel said they offer a free shuttle for hotel and gaming guests, running 11 a.m. to midnight throughout the festival, with perks that include free seafood fondue. “We have been super busy for both the events,” Patel said. “It’s way more convenient for the guests and the gaming patrons — where they board the shuttle, make it to the event on time, and not to worry about getting back.”Louder Than Life also offers a shuttle service .LMPD says shuttle buses get priority traffic and get to come in all gates even after they close because they’re strictly there to drop off and not park. For anyone interested in using Derby City Gaming and Hotel shuttle for pick up or drop off, call 502-961-7677.Here’s more information on festival parking and lineup.
