BALTIMORE (WBFF) — An explosion was reported Monday on a boat near the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse that occurred last year.
The explosion occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Aug.18.
According to a Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) spokesman, units responded by land and water to the site of the explosion in the Patapsco River shortly after the explosion occurred.
Upon arrival, they located the W Sapphire, a bulk carrier ship, “showing signs of damage consistent with a fire and explosion.”
The vessel remained afloat during the incident and received assistance from tug boats.
None of the 23 crew members aboard the ship was injured, and all were accounted for following the explosion.
The United States Coast Guard has begun an investigation into the explosion.
The ship will be brought to a designated anchor area and held there until cleared by the Coast Guard.
Gov. Wes Moore said in a post on X that his office is monitoring the situation:
On Tuesday morning, the Port of Baltimore posted on X that the Fort McHenry Federal Channel remains closed and the U.S. Coast Guard will determine when it can safely reopen:
