Ever since Drake Maye became the starting quarterback at North Carolina, he has drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Those comparisons didn’t stop in college.
When Maye was selected No. 3 overall by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, they only grew louder. As he enters his second year in the league, Maye is finally speaking out about the Allen comparisons.
Drake Maye Breaks Silence on Josh Allen Comparisons
Being compared to Josh Allen is never a bad thing, especially when you’re a young up-and-coming quarterback in the NFL like Drake Maye.
Allen has been a superstar since he entered the league in 2018, throwing for 26,434 yards and 195 touchdowns in seven seasons, and winning the NFL MVP in 2024.
While it’s something Maye can take pride in, he made it clear on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast that he knows he hasn’t earned those comparisons yet.
“You know he’s the MVP, I think the comparisons are, I got a lot of work to do with kind of being in the same stratosphere or atmosphere as Josh,” Maye said.
While Maye might not have fully earned the comparisons, it’s easy to see where they come from. Allen stands at 6’5″ and weighs 236 pounds, while Maye is also 6’5″ and comes in at 220.
It might be a stretch to say Maye has the same arm talent as Allen, but it’s pretty close. During his rookie season with New England, he showed he can make every throw on the field.

Much like Allen, Maye also has solid athleticism, especially for his size, and can make plays with his legs. He might not be confident to pull off Allen’s signature hurdle, but the athletic upside is clearly there.
As Maye points out, he still has a long way to go and a lot to prove if he wants to come close to what Allen has accomplished at the NFL level, but the traits are clearly there.
The Patriots made significant investments in their offense this offseason, including adding veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Once Allen’s favorite target, Diggs is now set to become Maye’s top option.
They also used the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to select LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, giving Maye much-needed protection.
The roster is imperfect, but with a true No. 1 receiver and improved protection, Maye could take a big step forward in year two.
The Bills and Patriots will meet in Week 5 in Foxborough and again in Week 15 in Buffalo, allowing fans to see the two quarterbacks who are so often compared go head-to-head in 2025.
