Middlesbrough tried and failed to sign a player who could now join Newcastle United to replace Alexander Isak.
Middlesbrough completed their first signing of the summer on Friday, confirming the addition of Alfie Jones from Hull City.
Boro have also added a couple more names to their U21 ranks this week, but incomings at the Riverside Stadium have been slow.
Newcastle United have had somewhat similar struggles in terms of incomings, but could now replace Alexander Isak with a player Middlesbrough previously tried and failed to sign.
Player Middlesbrough wanted could join Newcastle to replace Alexander Isak
After winning their first trophy in the 21st century, Newcastle have been trying to improve their squad.
However, Liverpool have been causing the Magpies problems, already signing Hugo Ekitike and still holding an interest in Alexander Isak.
Isak could leave the North East outfit this summer, and if he does, the Express and Star report that Newcastle have a strong interest in Jorgen Strand Larsen as a potential replacement.
Larsen is currently on the books of Wolverhampton Wanderers, but had things gone differently, he could be lining out for Middlesbrough right now.
As per Teesside Live, before he moved to Wolves, Boro offered around £10m to Groningen for the striker.
However, the Dutch club wanted closer to £12.5m – a fee the Teessiders would not match because of PSR restrictions.

Will Middlesbrough sign a striker this summer
With Emmanuel Latte Lath leaving in the winter window and Josh Coburn moving to Millwall, Boro only have one natural striker – Tommy Conway – at present.
Middlesbrough did have talks with Michael Smith, but he has since signed for Preston North End.
Meanwhile, advanced talks with Danny Ings have taken place, though he was hoping to secure a move to another Premier League side after his West Ham United exit.
The Englishman has received transfer interest from the MLS as well.
