San Francisco Giants fire manager Bob Melvin

SAN FRANCISCO — Less than three months after the San Francisco Giants committed to Bob Melvin for next season, club president Buster Posey dismissed his manager and announced that he will seek new dugout leadership.

Melvin was informed Monday morning that he had been relieved of duties. The club released a statement in which Posey expressed his “appreciation to Bob for his dedication, professionalism, and class. I wish him all the best.”

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” Posey continued. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”

The Giants were 161-163 in Melvin’s two seasons. They reached the .500 mark this season after winning their final four games, including a home sweep of the Colorado Rockies, whom they were 11-2 against. But the Giants critically finished 7-19 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, failing to crack the National League West’s upper echelon despite signing shortstop Willy Adames to the richest contract in club history (seven years, $182 million) and taking on more than $250 million while acquiring All-Star slugger Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox in June.

Melvin, who was hired under the leadership of former president Farhan Zaidi, had signed a two-year contract with a club option for 2026. Posey, who took over for Zaidi last October, picked up that option on July 1 while the team was in a funk, saying he had worked with Melvin long enough to feel confident that the two men had established a good rapport. At the time, Posey also put the onus on players to be responsible for their performance and production.

Obviously, at some point, that thinking changed.
