Saquon Barkley brings the juice – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles put on full pads for the second time in training camp and held a practice that lasted 1 hour and 56 minutes on Friday morning. Today felt like a scrimmage.

After the last two practices in extreme heat, Friday was a nice change of pace. The temperature was in the high 60s to start the day.

The Eagles will have an off day Saturday and will be back on the field Sunday morning. There’s less than a week until their first preseason game.

Here are our practice observations from Day 7:

1. As always, we start with some housekeeping:

• The injury report:

Did not practice: Zack Baun (back contusion), DeVonta Smith (back tightness), Nolan Smith (concussion), Terrace Marshall (knee), EJ Jenkins (hamstring), Mac McWilliams (quad), Ben VanSumeren (ankle)

Limited: Jihaad Campbell (shoulder), Jalen Carter (shoulder), Landon Dickerson (ribs), Cam Jurgens (back), Andrew Mukuba (shoulder)

• Mukuba had on shells and shorts while the rest of the team had full pads. But it was a positive sign to see him back as a limited participant.

• The additions to the injury report on Friday were McWilliams, VanSumeren and Dickerson.

• A.J. Brown didn’t participate in team drills in the second half of Friday’s practice. RB Montrell Johnson walked off at one point with a trainer.

• Head coach Nick Sirianni was under the weather and had to skip his pre-practice press conference. But the trainers were able to get him feeling good enough to run practice.

• Super Bowl LII champion Torrey Smith was at practice. Smith now works for SiriusXM Radio.

2. Depth chart notes:

• Kelee Ringo started out as the CB opposite Quinyon Mitchell and eventually Adoree’ Jackson worked in with the first team. This was Ringo’s third day starting with the ones, while Jackson has had four such days. Mitchell continues to flip side to side, mostly to stick with A.J. Brown.

• Without Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean, the Eagles’ top linebackers were Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Jihaad Campbell. Fellow rookie Smael Mondon Jr. did rotate in with the first team and got the most first-team reps we’ve seen for him so far in camp.

• Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean were the safeties in the base package and Sydney Brown was next to Blankenship in sub packages. With Andrew Mukuba still out of team drills, Brown is getting all those first-team reps.

• With Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson both limited, Brett Toth ended up filling in for Dickerson at left guard in some team reps and rookie Drew Kendall got snaps with the first team in place of Jurgens.

• Tyler Steen is still the right guard. He has taken every first-team rep there through seven practices.

• The second-team OL to start (L-R): Kendall Lamm, Kenyon Green, Trevor Keegan, Matt Pryor, Darian Kinnard. Rookies Myles Hinton (LT) and Drew Kendall (C) did get some reps. And Kinnard and Pryor flip-flopped again some too.

3. Friday was the Saquon Barkley show.

In a practice without DeVonta Smith and without A.J. Brown for the second half, Barkley got a ton of touches. After 482 touches last season, the Eagles aren’t showing any signs of limiting Barkley’s workload in 2025.

Early in the day, Barkley got the ball a ton but the most fun period came in the middle of the day during red zone work. Barkley caught a pass in the middle of the field and was tackled by Jihaad Campbell. Even though Barkley got up a bit gimpy, he stayed in and ran it up the gut for a touchdown. And then he punched in a two-point conversion.

Not only did Barkley have a productive day, not only did he show all the ability as a runner and receiver that helped him win Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, but he also talked a ton of trash. He especially dished it out to Jeremiah Trotter Jr. before and after that touchdown and 2-point conversion. But Trotter wasn’t the only one on the receiving end of Barkley’s trash talk. He had words for Reed Blankenship, Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, Cooper DeJean and more.

After Brandon Graham’s retirement and the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, some were wondering who would provide juice in practice. Barkley did it with his play and with his words on Friday. It was a lot of fun to watch.

4. Late in practice, Barkley had a chance to put an exclamation point on his day but rookie Smael Mondon Jr. stopped him. Mondon had excellent coverage down the left sideline on a Barkley wheel route. Instead of a 30-yard touchdown catch for the All-Pro, a rookie fifth-round pick stayed with him and knocked the ball away. Really tough duty for Mondon and a big-time play.

5. Early in practice, though, the wheel route did work. After Barkley got almost all the work with the first-team offense in an early period, Will Shipley came in and beat Jihaad Campbell on a wheel route down the right sideline for a 25+ yard touchdown. It was a great play by Shipley and a perfect throw from Jalen Hurts. Overall, it wasn’t Hurts’ best day but he was without DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown by the end of practice.

6. In the second 11-on-11 period of practice, A.J. Brown was able to come back on a ball and use his body to separate from Quinyon Mitchell at the catch point. After the play, Brown gave Mitchell a little shove. But on the very next play, Mitchell made a great break on the ball and got Brown back with a pass breakup.

7. Another day, another big play by Moro Ojomo, who has been one of the biggest stories of the summer. The third-year DT was able to get in the backfield and actually knocked the ball out of Jalen Hurts’ hands. A rare strip-sack in practice.

We also saw Azeez Ojulari make the most of some first-team reps with a sack. It has otherwise been a pretty quiet camp for the veteran. Jordan Davis also cleaned up on a coverage sack.

8. Elijah Cooks (6-4, 215) has been making a strong roster push. He caught a touchdown pass on an in-breaking route in front of Kelee Ringo on Friday. Cooks made a few grabs but also had an uncharacteristic drop in the middle of the field when he was wide open. Just one of those plays he would want back.

9. For the first time all camp, the Eagles went live (tackle to the ground) with the third teams late in the day. Rookie running back ShunDerrick Powell (5-7, 183) was able to get into the end zone on a stretch run to the right. He ran through an arm tackle from CB B.J. Mayes.

10. Some odds and ends:

• Quinyon Mitchell had a pass breakup in the end zone on a 4th-down throw from Jalen Hurts that he lofted toward Saquon Barkley.

• OLB Ochaun Mathis had an active day with a batted pass and a sack.

• Working with the first-team defense, Kelee Ringo was flagged for DPI down the field against Jahan Dotson. Ringo made contact and never got his head turned. Ringo has been handsy at times in his career so that’s definitely something to note.

• Lewis Cine had a pass breakup with the second-team defense on Friday. He has been quiet in camp.

• Guard Trevor Keegan has been working at center and really struggled to elevate his snaps on Friday. Tanner McKee made some athletic plays to get low and handle some of those bad snaps. After practice, Keegan spent some extra time working on snapping the ball. He’s a work in progress.

• In 1-on-1s, Jordan Mailata was very good on Friday but did get beat once by Azeez Ojulari. Moro Ojomo beat Landon Dickerson with a swim move but Dickerson shut down a bullrush on the next rep. The Eagles got rookie Ty Robinson some reps off the edge in those OL-DL 1-on-1s. Robinson played up and down the line at Nebraska so that’s an interesting development. He had a nice move on fellow rookie Cameron Williams.

Stupid Observation of the Day: Before practice, Jake Elliott was kicking field goals on the only goal posts set up at the NovaCare Complex. On Friday, those uprights were right in front of the media tent and Elliott nearly took out some reporters and camera operators. He walked over an apologized after.
