The First Wives Club brought together three comedic powerhouses for one unforgettable story about friendship, love and finding purpose.
The 1996 film starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton as a trio of friends mourning the loss of pal Cynthia (Stockard Channing), who died by suicide after her ex-husband married a much-younger mistress.
Additionally, Maggie Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victor Garber, Elizabeth Berkley, Stephen Collins and Marcia Gay Harden appeared in supporting roles. More than 20 years after the film’s release, Hawn teased that a sequel was being discussed.
“The script has to be approved and right now they’ve just given us another draft, so I gotta read that,” she told Entertainment Tonight in November 2020. “So, we’re inching our way towards it, let’s put it that way.”
Unfortunately, Midler gave a not-so-hopeful update in September 2022, telling People, “I used to lobby for First Wives Club too, but there were political reasons they didn’t want to do that again. And it always broke my heart.”
Midler continued, “I really felt that it was a pretty serious diss, because when women have hits, it’s a fluke. But when men have hits, isn’t it great? At least that’s what they told us on First Wives.”
