Western Michigan student slays Niall Horan song in front of Horan on ‘The Voice’

Talk about bold. A college student from Michigan performed a Niall Horan song in front of Horan on the season 28 premiere of “The Voice.”

Jack Austin, 21, is a Battle Creek native. He is currently a musical theater student at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Austin performed, “This Town” for his Blind Audition on the NBC singing competition airing on Monday, September 22.

Michael Bublé was the first coach to turn his chair for Austin, followed by Horan and then Reba McEntire. Snoop Dogg is the only coach who did not to turn a chair for him.

“Great song choice,” said Bublé. “I’d love to have somebody like you on my team.”

“I thought you did an amazing job,” added Horan. “I could tell you were a little bit nervous. I thought your melody choices that you made, I was like, I should have thought of that. That song is quite simple and you made it climactic.”

Horan then went on stage to perform a duet with Austin. “Thank you! This is a dream come true,” Austin said after singing with Horan.

“Jack, that was really, really special,” said McEntire. “And if I could have gotten to do that with one of of my heroes, I would have just been in heaven. Your voice is pure sweet.”

Austin chose Horan to be his coach going forward. “I have to go with my new duet partner, Niall.”

“His voice was so pure. He had riffs. He had range. He had dynamic. He had all of it. I’m so happy I have Jack on Team Niall.”

The Blind Auditions continue tomorrow night. Austin has advanced to round two, the Battle Round.
