WTA Seoul Day 1 Predictions
Maya Joint vs Linda Fruhvirtova
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Maya Joint has enjoyed a rocky stretch on hard courts, unable to build on the form and confidence that saw her lift the title in Eastbourne a few months ago with her aggressive game. Linda Fruhvirtova had to come through qualifying in Seoul and looked sharp in her final match to earn her place in the draw. This will be their first meeting, and it sets up a classic test of youthful firepower against an opponent who has already been battle-tested this week. If Fruhvirtova carries over that level, her match sharpness could make the difference.
Prediction: Fruhvirtova in 3
Jessika Ponchet vs Ella Seidel
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Jessika Ponchet has been grinding out results mainly at ITF level, but her flat strokes can do damage on hard courts. Ella Seidel, younger and still finding her way on tour, has shown steady progress and looks increasingly comfortable on this surface. Both players came through qualifying, and with no head-to-head to lean on, it shapes up as an interesting contrast of experience versus momentum. If Seidel can settle quickly, her recent form could give her a slight edge.
Prediction: Seidel in 3
Laura Siegemund vs Sofia Kenin
Head-to-Head: Kenin 3–0 Siegemund
Siegemund’s variety can trouble opponents, though her results since the US Open swing have lacked consistency. Kenin, meanwhile, has shown flashes of her 2020 level with some strong runs on hard courts this year, but she arrives in Seoul on a four-match losing streak. She does hold a 3-0 record against Siegemund, including their meeting at Roland Garros last year, with the earlier contests played on hard courts. Given the surface, Kenin’s more direct baseline game may still prove the sharper weapon if she can find her rhythm.
Prediction: Kenin in 2
