Mephisto’s Potential MCU Return Addressed By Sacha Baron Cohen

Sacha Baron Cohen debuted as Mephisto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025, and now the actor has addressed the character’s potential return to the franchise.

Following her appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, 2025s Ironheart followed Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams being exposed to the supernatural when she met Anthony Ramos’ Parker Robbins, also known as The Hood. He paled in comparison to the demonic entity Mephisto, who appeared in the Ironheart finale, but Marvel Studios hasn’t shed any light on the character’s future since then.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley for Ladies First, Cohen’s new comedy movie co-starring Rosamund Pike, he was asked if the public would see Mephisto or Borat again first. The actor was confident his Marvel character stood a better chance of gracing screens again. Check out his comments below:

I think Mephisto. I don’t know if Borat will ever return.

Cohen is best known for playing fictional satirical characters who interact with unsuspecting people out in the real world. That includes Borat Sagdiyev, who was originally one of the primary characters on Da Ali G Show, then starred in his own 2006 mockumentary. 14 years later, Cohen revived Borat for the sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which featured Maria Bakalova as the character’s daughter, Tutar.

While Cohen is doubtful Borat will resurface, he at least thinks it’s a possibility for Mephisto. After the character was previously suspected by fans to appear in 2021’s WandaVision, Mephisto finally entered the MCU in the Ironheart episode “The Past is in the Past.” FIrst, flashbacks depicted Robbins making a deal with the entity in exchange for his magical cloak.

Then in the present-day storyline, Riri made her own deal with Mephisto. This resulted in her friend Natalie being resurrected, but also caused weird glowing veins representing the entity appearing on Riri’s arms. As with Cohen’s Mephisto, there’s been no announcement about if the Ironheart story will continue or if Thorne will reprise Riri in a different upcoming Marvel TV show.

Introduced in 1968’s Silver Surfer #3 by writer Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, Mephisto is derived from the Faust legend antagonist Mephistopheles. His other frequent adversaries in Marvel Comics include Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Scarlet Witch. He was previously portrayed in live action by Peter Fonda in 2007’s Ghost Rider, then Ciarán Hinds in 2012’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

After Ironheart’s summer 2025 run, the Kathryn Hahn-led WandaVision spinoff Agatha All Along was released a few months later. Since then, however, the MCU has largely avoided pointing the spotlight on the MCU’s magical/supernatural corners. Upcoming Marvel movies and other projects reside more in either street-level action (Spider-Man: Brand New Day), more emphasized science fiction (VisionQuest), or cosmic-level storytelling (Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars).

As the wait for more from Cohen’s Mephisto continues, following Daredevil: Born Again season 2’s conclusion and the release of the Marvel Studios Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill, the next chapter of the MCU will unfold when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31.

Ladies First will be available exclusively on Netflix starting Friday, May 22.
