The defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0) hold the No. 1 spot in the latest College Football Playoff rankings as they prepare to host the UCLA Bruins (3-6), who won’t have quarterback Nico Iamaleava, on Saturday night.

Ohio State improved to 6-0 in the Big Ten with a 34-10 road victory at Purdue last week. After falling behind 3-0 early, the Buckeyes erupted for 24 second-quarter points and cruised from there. CJ Donaldson Jr. scored two rushing touchdowns while Julian Sayin was 27-of-33 for 303 yards and a touchdown with an interception in the rout. Bo Jackson ran for 75 yards on 14 carries, and Jeremiah Smith caught 10 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. The defense limited the Boilermakers to 186 yards, and Jermaine Matthews Jr. picked off a pass.
Iamaleava sustained a concussion in UCLA’s 28-21 loss to visiting Nebraska last week, displaying symptoms after the game in which he threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 86 yards on 15 attempts. Anthony Woods and Anthony Frias II caught TD passes in the loss. Redshirt sophomore Luke Duncan is poised to make his first career start on Saturday night, coming into the game having never attempted a pass at the college level in a tough first test.
The teams are meeting for the first time since the Bruins joined the Big Ten before last season, having last played in 2001. The all-time series is even at 4-4-1.
