“Unpredictable” British crime thriller climbs up trending chart on UK streamer

Fuze, the “unpredictable” British crime thriller starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James, is proving to be a success with viewers. After being added to a UK streamer on Friday (29 May), the film has climbed up the trending chart.

Written by Ben Hopkins and directed by David Mackenzie, the heist thriller is set in London amid an evacuation order, after an unexploded bomb from World War II is discovered on a building site.

A specialist military unit, led by Major Will Tranter (Taylor-Johnson), is called in to defuse the bomb, though it provides perfect cover for Karalis (James) and his team of bank robbers to perform a lucrative heist.

After being released in cinemas in April, the crime thriller was made available to stream on Sky Cinema and NOW last week, and it looks to have been a hit with viewers as it is currently the most-watched film on NOW.

Both services require a subscription – Sky Cinema costs £10 a month on top of a normal TV package, while the Cinema package with NOW currently has a 30% saving as it costs £6.99 a month.

Featuring Sam Worthington and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in supporting roles, Fuze has been generally praised by critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a solid approval rating of 73% from 102 reviews.

Sight & Sound called it “a gripping, unpredictable heist thriller that prizes momentum over depth”, adding: “Fuze guns its own engine, understanding that any lull in the action might allow the audience to begin considering its contrivances.”

The Times echoed these sentiments in a three-star review, writing: “The twists are many and some predictable, but the mood here is mostly, and unapologetically, guilty-pleasure hokum.”

“Much about what ensues is cheerfully hokey… But there is also a real joie de vivre to how Mackenzie and writer Ben Hopkins contrive twist after twist, making actors and genres collide as if playing with mismatched action figures,” noted The Financial Times.

The San Jose Mercury News was also full of praise, writing: “Mackenzie never takes the weight off the pedal off this twisty, hyper-efficient thriller that comes fully loaded with eye candy and a gutsy plot detour in its final act. Put the brain on mute and just enjoy.”

Elsewhere on Sky Cinema and NOW, other films that have recently been added to the services include Danny Dyer’s one-man sports thriller One Last Deal and popular period drama Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

Fuze is streaming on Sky Cinema and NOW.
