In the wake of the storms, we now have a much quieter start to the work week for Monday.
Several reports of damaging winds and large hail came in across the KVUE area as the line of storms pushed eastward through the region. Some locations saw hail up to golf ball size, while the strongest storms were capable of producing wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph. Heavy rainfall also accompanied the storms, leading to pockets of minor street flooding and reduced visibility at times. Fortunately, the overall severe weather threat has now completely ended for all of Central Texas.
Lingering rain will continue overnight into the very early morning hours, especially east of Interstate 35, but by sunrise Monday, rain chances should be coming to an end and skies will gradually begin to clear from west to east.
In the wake of the storm system, Central Texas is set up for a really pleasant stretch of weather to begin the week. Monday afternoon will feature noticeably lower humidity, a mostly sunny sky, and temperatures that are actually a little cooler than average for mid-May. Afternoon highs should top out in the low 80s across much of the Austin metro and surrounding areas.
The warming trend resumes by Tuesday, although conditions will still remain very comfortable overall. High temperatures will climb into the mid 80s with a mix of sunshine and dry weather continuing area-wide.
As we move into the middle and latter part of the workweek, temperatures will continue to trend upward. By Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, many areas are expected to return to the upper 80s and low 90s during the afternoon hours. Despite the warmer temperatures, rain chances remain very low through the end of the workweek as a drier weather pattern settles in behind Sunday night’s storms.
Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend, the forecast does begin to turn slightly more unsettled again. At this point, rain chances on Saturday look fairly isolated and limited, but there may be a somewhat better opportunity for scattered showers and storms by Sunday. Forecast confidence remains lower that far out, but longer-range data continues to suggest a potentially more active weather pattern could redevelop heading into next week.
The KVUE Weather Team will continue to monitor forecast trends closely over the coming days. In the meantime, the latest extended forecast can be found below.
